I recently picked up a Source magazine and was not happy with what was produced. I used to be a devout reader of the magazine. It used to be hip hop gospel to me. I would read everything and it was part of my decision making process when buying a new CD that just came on to the shelves. I mean those were the days when you would get a CD and only one track would sound good so the Source played a heavy part in finding the right CD to purchase.
Now it has been a minute since I picked up the magazine, one of the reasons I stopped reading it was because they had too many ads of Benzino (Remember those Master P diamond Benzino Ads). But recently on my daily Barnes and Nobles mission I decided to check it out. And what I found out is.......
IT SUCKED!!!! I mean the layout was terrible. The pictures sucked and the articles definitely sucked. Here is my proof, long ago when the Source was a hip hop magazine ran by David Mays the articles where about hip hop artist and the music they were making from Easy E to GangStarr to Biggie to De La Soul the articles were on point.
Now as I am flipping from page to page there was baseball, green environment people, politics and a whole bunch of other stuff that had nothing to do with the music. Did something get lost along the years with this magazine, who decided to turn it into a hip hop Newsweek Magazine?  Look people in hip hop want to be educated but we are about the music. Always have been and always will be. The music is what is important to us. You can throw away everything else and the music lives on. The music is the story!
The music is the reason why we wake up in the morning, the music is why we keep super late nights, the music is why we search for the hottest vintage records we can find (I like to dig in the crates), the music is why we ignore some hot chicks while we make beats, the music is why we tolerate idiots when they step in front of a microphone and have no idea what they are doing but they keep saying" Yo! Turn it up in my headphones, turn my mic up". It's all about the music and that is what has been lost in the Source Magazine.
I believe it's under new management these days but I think they need to take it back to the past when it meant something. There was a day when the Source magazine had power and prestige in the hip hop community; no longer do those days exist. XXL has the juice now (yeah I took it there) and they are on top of their game.
The Source Magazine has a lot of work to do to get back to the status they once possessed. I wish them well in the journey to the top.  My advice to them is "Get Back to the Music!!!" If you are interested in making the press check you or group out then you need to check out 2010hiphop.info for the top free information you can get to make your music dreams come true. Make sure you do it today!!!!
